Role of handkerchief in the play Othello



 Shakespeare, the greatest among the playwrights, introduced a common handkerchief in the play and it played a major role. In the play, Othello gifted his ladylove Desdemona a handkerchief after his marriage as his token of love. But jealous Iago wanted to harm Othello. So, he planned and told his wife Emilia to steal that particular handkerchief from Desdemona’s house and drop it in Cassio’s room so that Iago became successful to make Othello believe that Desdemona had extramarital affair with Cassio. Othello noticed the handkerchief in Cassio’s house and immediately asked Desdemona to produce the handkerchief. Desdemona was failed to show it and Othello was convinced about her infidelity in love. Later, it proved fatal in the relationship between Othello and Desdemona and at last Othello killed her in anger. This all happened due to the handkerchief.
