Why did Othello Kill Desdemona and himself? OR, Who was responsible for the death of Desdemona and Othello?


Answer: Othello Promoted Cassio to the post of Lieutenant and it made Iago furious and jealousy because Iago was senior to Cassio and more fit for the post than Cassio. Anyhow, he wanted to take revenge against both Othello and Cassio. He could not tolerate that biased decision of Othello. Anger consumed Iago. He immediately planned and scandalized Othello’s wife Desdemona before Othello and made Othello believe that she had an extramarital affair with Cassio. Iago also proved her to be an unfaithful lady. Othello became very angry and out of suspicion and anger, he killed his wife Desdemona by strangulation. 

After the murder, when he realized that he had made a blunder and found his wife innocent, he killed himself by stabbing.

Who promoted Cassio to the post of lieutenant and what was its result?


Answer: In the tragedy Othello by Shakespeare, Othello promoted Cassio to the post of lieutenant because he was very close friend of Othello and helped Othello and his beloved Desdemona in their love affair.


This incident brought a dramatic turn in the play. Another character of the play Iago was senior to Cassio and more experienced than Cassio in technique of warfare. So, Iago deserved the post of lieutenant. He was not happy with Othello’s decision to promote Cassio. Besides, Cassio’s characteristics of impressing others and speaking very sweetly made Iago jealously. He planned to ruin both Othello and Cassio by treachery and making them enemy of each other. At the end of the play, it was seen that the protagonist killed himself after murdering his wife Desdemona on the doubt of extramarital affair with Cassio. Thus, Iago took revenge.

How did Desdemona fall in love with Othello? OR, Why did Desdemona marry Othello?

 

Answer: In the tragedy Othello by Shakespeare, Desdemona was the only daughter of Brabantio who was the senator of Venice. She was very polite, young and always radiated beauty. Othello was the general of Brabantio. So, the senator used to invite Othello to his house. There Othello used to tell Desdemona the stories of battlefield, army, their bravery of different lands of known and unknown. Thus, gradually Desdemona became fond of Othello. One day Desdemona learnt about Othello’s past life that made her sympathetic for Othello. Besides, Othello’s bravery, stout physique attracted her very much. Day by day Desdemona felt passion of love for Othello. Othello also responded to her love. And finally, their love got plenitude through secret marriage.
