Though Gieve Patel, in his poem On Killing a Tree, presents a common matter of killing a tree, he actually mocks at those people who cut or kill trees indiscriminately. Here he satirically presents tree as a villain and shows the process of killing it. A tree has grown slowly consuming the earth’s water, air and years of sunlight. So it has no right to remain alive. But only a simple jab of knife will not kill it. Rather the bleeding bark will heal soon and boughs and twigs will come out from close to the ground. And gradually it will grow to its former size. So, to perform the murder, its root needs to be roped and pulled out of its ‘earth-cave’ entirely. Then it needs to be scorched, chocked, browned, twisted to death in sun and air.
