What role did suspicion and mistrust play between Othello and Desdemona?

Answer:  Though Othello was black complexioned Moor, Desdemona loved him and they married each other secretly and later, her father approved of the marriage. But Iago became furious and jealousy when Othello promoted Cassio to the post of Lieutenant and being more experienced and senior to Cassio, Iago deserved that post. To take revenge against both of them, Iago planned a plot of false military riot and blamed Cassio totally for it. As a result, Othello removed him from his post. Later, Iago planted the seeds of suspicion in his mind that his wife Desdemona had illicit love-affair with Cassio. Iago, with the help of his wife, stole a handkerchief of Desdemona and informed Othello that he had seen Cassio to use that handkerchief which was a token of their love. When Desdemona could not show the handkerchief, Othello became furious and accused her of infidelity and finally killed her out of mistrust and suspicion. Later on, when Othello realized that Desdemona was innocent, he also killed himself. Thus, suspicion and mistrust brought tragedy in the main story.

Character of Othello.

Answer: The protagonist character Othello was a man of both weakness and greatness that might be described in his own words "an honourable murderer". He was a Moor of Africa and by his excellence in warfare, he got the post of general of Venice. He was brave, intelligent and respectful to his army. At any situation he was dutiful towards his nation. On the other hand, he proved himself as a true and valiant lover and secretly married Brabantio’s daughter Desdemona. Othello did not fail to admire Desdemona’s qualities, beauty and also told her about his past life that was full of danger and adventure. He was very straightforward as in front of the Senator, he did not hesitate to confess his marriage with Desdemona and with his skillfully worded defense, Othello acquired consent from Brabantio.

Othello easily believed everyone and for that Iago easily could drive him to jealousy and think that Desdemona had extramarital affairs with Cassio. He could not smell the conspiracy of Iago and he had a habit to take impulsive decision. Ultimately that cost him huge penalty that Othello had to pay with both his and his wife’s life.

Answer:  In the last scene of Othello, it was seen that Desdemona is sleeping in her bedroom with a broken heart as her husband Othello had charged her of infidelity in love. Before sleeping, she spread her wedding bedsheet on the bed. Then Othello entered the room. Here he played the self-appointed dual role of judge and executioner. Before committing the murder of his wife, he for the last time, adored and loved Desdemona with kisses and also wept. Suddenly his wife awoke and discovered her husband in such condition. Othello’s mood took an unexpected turn and told her to pray and confess any hidden sin that she might have on her conscience. Also, he told her to be prepared for her death. Desdemona, though begged for her life, Othello cared nothing and alleged that she had gifted his token of love, a certain handkerchief to Cassio. Then Othello killed her strangling her with the bedsheet in a dramatic way.
