Write a short note on the character of Lachmi. OR “I am only a native woman”—Give the characteristics of that woman.

* Lachmi, the wife of Sir Mohan Lal, was a middle-aged native woman. She was very simple and illiterate. She usually talked in native language. She neither knew English culture nor English language. She had a diamond ring on one side of her nose and had several ornaments on her body. She always wore dirty sari with red border and used to sit on her suitcase. She fanned herself with a newspaper. She always chewed betel leaves. Being simple she used to talk with common people like collie, bearer. She used to eat simple foods like chapattis, mango pickle anytime, anywhere from her tiffin carrier. She washed her hand in the public tap and dried it with the lose end of her sari. She usually travelled by zenana compartment while travelling in train. These factors pointed to the fact that she was an ordinary, native woman, opposite to Mohan Lal.
