But sad mortality o’er-sways their power,

How with this rage shall beauty hold a plea,

Whose action is no stronger than a flower?

O, how shall summer’s honey breath hold out

Against the wrackful siege of batt’ring days,

When rocks impregnable are not so stout,

Nor gates of steel so strong, but time decays?

O fearful meditation! where, alack,

Shall time’s best jewel from time’s chest lie hid?

Or what strong hand can hold his swift foot back?

Or who his spoil of beauty can forbid?

যখন পিতলের বস্তু, পাথর এর স্থাপত্য অথবা পৃথিবী বা অসীম সমুদ্র

করুন মৃত্যুর কাছে হার মেনে যায়

তখন সময়ের ক্ষোভের বিরুদ্ধে বন্ধুর সৌন্দর্য কিভাবে রুখে দাঁড়াবে

যার ক্ষমতা একটি ফুলের ক্ষমতার চেয়ে বেশি না?

ওহ, কিভাবে গ্রীষ্মের মধুর সুগন্ধ / বন্ধুর সৌন্দর্য প্রতিহত করবে

সময়ের বারংবার ধ্বংসাত্বক আক্রমন কে

যখন দুর্ভেদ্য পাথর ততটা শক্তিশালী না

বা স্টিলের গেট ও ততটা শক্তিশালী না সময়ের ধ্বংস লীলার কাছে?

সময়ের সৃষ্ট সবথেকে সুন্দর বস্তু / তুমি নিজেকে লুকিয়ে রাখতে পারবে সময়ের সিন্ধুক/ কফিন থেকে?

অথবা কোন শক্তিশালী হাত সময় কে আটকাতে পারবে

অথবা কেউ কি সময়কে আটকাতে পারবে বন্ধুর সৌন্দর্য ধ্বংস করা থেকে?

কেউ পারবে না, যদিনা কোন অলৌকিক ঘটনা ঘটে

শুধু মাত্র আমার কবিতার লেখনীর মধ্যে দিয়ে আমার প্রিয় বন্ধু অমর হয়ে বেঁচে থাকবে।

Paraphrase of Sonnet-1

Brass, stone may be very hard and long lasting and they may be used in building, monuments and memorials but all are in the clutch of Time. Whether it is our beloved earth, and whether it is limitless sea, Time conquers them all despite their strength, hugeness; and the spectacle of the damage, which they suffer in course of time, is saddening to us. When all the strong, hard things fail to resist the attack of Time, how poet’s friend’s beauty would able to resist the fury of Time because his beauty is no more durable than a flower.

The poet also is saddened to think that how can the sweetness of summer breeze i.e. the beauty of youth of his friend withstand the destructive power of Time when even the invulnerable rocks and the gates made of steel are not strong enough to stand firm against the destructive power of Time.

Alas, it is really a dreadful thought that even the most beautiful person’s bauty created by Time itself cannot subsequently be kept hidden from Time grip which would evidently bring his life, his beauty to an end. The poet thinks that even the strongest hand cannot prevent Time from moving forward at its high speed to perish the beauty of poet’s friend. Nobody can stop Time from working havoc with beauty.

In the concluding couplet, the poet shows his great faith in his creation i.e. his poetry. He knows that nothing except a miracle can prevent Time from doing its destruction; and such a miracle may take place through his sonnet’s line being written by the poet in black ink in which the beauty of his beloved friend would probably continue to shine for ever even from one generation to another generation.
