“I am a man: little do in last / And the night is enormous."--Explain

Universe

Answer: The poet Octavio Paz, through philosophic curiosity, comes to realize the very truth about human life. He sees that the existence of a man in this world is very short. While observing the starry sky, the poet also gets a realization that human life is insignificant too in the perspect of his position in this infinite universe. The word ‘night’ stands for vast universe or the life after death. They both are limitless. In this infinite span of time or space, the life of a human being seems to be very helpless. So in the very beginning lines of this poem, the poet includes the conclusion of his final realization on his life that he is just a man and human being is his only identity.
