Ans: In of the story “Thank You Ma’am”, Hughes has superbly portrayed the main character, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, who has a contrast in herself. Mrs. Jones is a large as well as a valiant woman who works in hotel beauty-shop. She often returns home from her job at dead of night. Her rudeness, alertness, and strictness are displayed when she kicks, rattles Roger as he tries to snatch her purse. On the other hand, her kindness, motherly tenderness are displayed when she makes Roger’s face washed, prepares and offers him food and ultimately gives him ten dollars to buy suede shoes for which he tries to commit the snatching. Overall, Mrs. Jones is a reformer of character as she, by her kindness, behavior and affection, transforms Roger into another man.
