Throughout the story Karma by Khushwant Singh, Lachmi has been present as an uneducated, native girl who does not know manner, attitude, culture of upper class. She even does not know the English language. So, she does not travel by first class compartment with her husband. She alone travels in zenana compartment. Her husband is totally opposite to her. He hates his wife along with other Indians. But at the very end of the story, it is seen that ironically all his pride falls when two British solders whom he loves, admires beat him, throw him out of the firstclass compartment. On the other hand, simple, uncultured Lachmi happily travels and spits her betel saliva from train making a jet of red dribble flying across like a dart. Here the Indian Lachmi wins over Mohan Lal and as if that victory is reflected through the flying red dribble.
