Answer: At that time India was under the British rule. Most of the officials were either British or British culture loving Indian like Mohan Lal. The British people hated and underestimated native men physically and mentally and always abused them saying ‘nigger’. People were classified in wealth, education, and manner. Train had different classes for different people. British, high ranked officials travelled by first class. Compartment for ladies were preserved separately. Travelling in first class at that time was very luxurious; even there was facility to drink in train. Station waiting rooms were attended and served by bearer. The jobs like bearer, coolie were performed by native men. That society was a male-dominating society. It is clearly seen through the attitudes of Mohan Lal towards his native wife Lachmi.
