A DEVASTATING FLOOD HITS UTTARAKHAND

Uttarakhand, Sept 30, 2013: In June 2013 a devastating flood hits in many parts of north India mainly in Uttarakhand. According to the official source a sudden heavy fall of rain caused devastating floods and massive landslides. The source added that the heavy current of the water collapsed many houses, washed away many people, vehicles. According to figures provided by the Uttarakhand Government, more than 5,700 people were presumed dead. The report also said that the flood destroyed near about 365 houses completely and also damaged 275 houses partially. Over 70,000 people including pilgrims to Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath from different parts of India were stuck in various regions because of damaged or blocked roads. The Government has taken so many necessary steps. Several thousand soldiers were deployed for the rescue mission. Helicopters were used to rescue the victims, but the rough terrain, heavy fog and rainfall interrupted the rescue operation. Food, tents, drinking water, medicines were distributed among the victims. During the operation some soldiers died due to helicopter crash. Various social organizations have extended their helping hand. According to the latest news, searching for bodies who died during the extreme natural fury of June in Kedar valley continued for several months and even as late September, 2013, about 166 bodies were found in highly decomposed state.
