 One Day I Wrote her Name কবিতা টি সনেট সিরিজ অ্যামোরেটি (89 সনেট) -এর 75 তম সনেট যেটিতে এলিজাবেথ বয়েলের সাথে স্পেনসারের প্রেমের গল্প রয়েছে।

 এটি প্রথম প্রকাশিত হয়েছিল 1595 সালে।

About the Poet:

 Edmund Spenser was an English poet.

 Spencer is famous for his The Faerie Queen. It is an epic poem and fantastical allegory that celebrates the Tudor dynasty and Elizabeth I.

 He is often considered one of the greatest poets in the English language.

 Spencer was born in East Smithfield, London, around 1552.

 He was probably the son of John Spenser & Elizabeth.

 He married his first wife, Machabyas Childe in 1579 but she died in 1593.

 Then he married Elizabeth Boyle in 1594.

 He died in 1599 in London, England.

One day I wrote her name upon the strand
একদিন আমি তার নাম লিখে ছিলাম সমুদ্র তটে

But came the waves and washed it away
কিন্তু ঢেউ এল এবং তার নাম মুছে দিয়ে গেলো

Again I wrote it with a second hand
আবার আমি তার নাম দ্বিতীয় বার লিখলাম

But came the tide, and made my pains his prey
কিন্তু আবার ঢেউ এলো এবং আমার প্রচেষ্টা কে তার শিকার বানালো

"Vain man," said she, "that dost in vain assay

A mortal thing so to immortalize
একটি মরণশীল জিনিস কে তুমি এই ভাবে অমর করতে চাইছো;

For I myself shall like to this decay
কারন আমি নিজেও একদিন এমন ভাবে মারা যাবো

And eke my name be wiped out likewise."

এবং একই ভাবে আমার নাম ও পৃথিবী থেকে মুছে যাবে”

“এমন টি হবে না” আমি বললাম, “মূল্যহীন বস্তু গুলি ধ্বংস হয়ে যাবে

To die in dust, but you shall live by fame:
মারা গিয়ে সেগুলি ধুলোতে মিশে যাবে, কিন্তু তুমি চিরকাল বেঁচে থাকবে খ্যাতির মধ্যে দিয়ে

My verse your vertues rare shall eternize,
আমার কবিতা তোমার দুষ্প্রাপ্য গুন গুলিকে অমর করে রাখবে

And in the heavens write your glorious name:
এবং স্বর্গে/ মৃত্যুর পর ও তোমার নাম কে গৌরবময় করে রাখবে

Where whenas death shall all the world subdue
যখন মৃত্যু গোটা পৃথিবী কে গ্রাস করবে

Our love shall live, and later life renew"
তখন ও আমাদের ভালোবাসা বেঁচে থাকবে এবং মৃত্যুর পর ও সেই ভালোবাসা বেঁচে থাকবে”

Substance in Short: The poet writes the name of his beloved on the shore, but waves wash it away. It is vain to immortalise the love which is mortal by its very nature. The beloved herself is subject to decay. But the poet is confident that he will immortalise his love in poetry. Poetry will conquer time and death, and their life will be renewed through death.
