Festivals play a big role in the life of Bengal people. It is always said that there are thirteen festivals in twelve months in West Bengal. Among the festivals some common festivals are Holi, Durga Puja, Kali Puja, the Eid, Maharam etc. The most important Hindu festival in Bengal is Durga puja. It is supposed that goddess Durga comes during the festival in Autumn to visit her father’s house. This puja brings happiness in every house of Bengal. The Holi festival is to celebrate the coming of Spring. On this day people play with each other with colourful water. Another great festival of Bengal is Diwali during the Kali puja. It is the festival of sound and light. The main feature of this festival is the illumination of the houses with oil-lamps. Festivals help men to forget their worries and also festivals break down the barriers between different creeds.
