Sonnet 116: Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.

O no! it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.

Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

If this be error and upon me prov'd,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov'd.


আমি স্বীকার করি প্রকৃত মনের মিলনে
কোনো বাঁধা আসে না। সেই ভালোবাসা ভালোবাসাই না
যেটি প্রেমিকার বদলে যাওয়ার সাথে সাথে নিজেও বদলে যায়
বা প্রেমিকার ভালোবাসা হারিয়ে যাওয়ার সাথে সাথে নিজের ভালবাসাও দিক পরিবর্তন করে।

প্রেম হল পথ হারানো জাহাজের কাছে ধ্রুব তারার মত
যার মূল্য অজানা, কিন্তু তার উচ্চতা মাপা যেতে পারে।

ভালোবাসা সময়ের হাতের পুতুল না, যদিও প্রেমিকার গোলাপের মত ঠোঁট এবং গাল
সময়ের বাঁকা কাস্তের কোপের মধ্যে আসতে পারে; / শারীরিক সৌন্দর্য হারাতে পারে
ভালোবাসা ক্ষুদ্র সময় এর মধ্যে পরিবর্তন হয় না
বরং ভালোবাসা পৃথিবীর ধ্বংসের মুহূর্ত অবধি বেঁচে থাকবে।

এই সব যদি ভুল প্রমানিত হয় এবং সব কথা গুলি আমার বিরুদ্ধে যায়
তাহলে মেনে নেব আমি কোনো দিন লিখি নি বা কোন মানুষ কখনই ভালবাসেনি।

Paraphrase / Critical Appreciation of Sonnet – 130

The poet Shakespeare here glorifies the eternity of LOVE in his Sonnet- 116. He considers that the real love remains unchanged at any time of life. The Poet is not ready to admit any obstacle in the way of their union of true lovers. Love is not true or real if it gets a changed when his beloved’s love gets changed. A man's love for his beloved is not true if it changes its direction when his beloved shifts her affections from him to somebody else.

This type of love is not solicited. True love is like a fixed mark like a lighthouse on the sea beach that stands firm against the power of storms and gales on the sea, and is never shaken from its place and carries out its duty. Also the poet compares true love to the northern star which remains fixed in its position in the sky. It in olden days, used to serve as a guide to ships sailing on the sea. Just like it, a true love can guide a wandering lover and can take him to his right love. The value of the northern star was infinite and could never be measured, even though its height from the earth could be judged with a fair degree of accuracy.

Time cannot capture true love in his clutch or Time cannot bring true love in the mouth of bending sickle. Though the poet admits that Time cannot kill the love totally but can snatch away the physical beauty of beloved just like the rosy lips and cheeks of a beautiful woman may fade and lose their charm. Poem also admits that real love does not change within a very little time period; rather it remains unchanged till the doom’s day. Until the earth gets destroyed, the true love will live.

In the concluding couplet, Shakespeare challenges the readers to prove his theory of true love wrong and he declares that if he is proved wrong, and if his own love for my beloved is proved to be impure, he would admit that whatever he has written in his life should be treated as unwritten, and that no man has ever loved anybody truly.
